East Central Report — Region 4 Including the Pecos

Pecos Mountains:

Pecos River: Stocked from Cowels to Village with 2500 Rainbow Trout this week! Mora Creek was stocked with 595 rainbow Trout.

A major River originating in the Pecos Wilderness flowing South into Texas. Fish species- Rainbow, Brown and Cutthroat Trout above Villanueva State Park.

Flow:  107 CFS water is high, flows are dropping and wading is getting better every day. 

Clarity:  Murky

Shore fishing conditions: Fair to good, Fish the slower water and look for slack water hiding places.

Trout:  Fair to good, stone fly's are up to Terrero

Flies: Nymph rigs-stonefly nymph with a trailing pheasant tail or black midge, egg patterns, red or chartruese copper higgins, sofa pillows and madam x

Lures:  Spinners

Bait:  Worms, power bait and Salmon eggs

Monastery Lake: Stocked with 807 Trout last week and 809 again this week.

A 6 acre lake 2 mile North of Pecos. Fish species- Rainbow Trout.

Remember the river adjacent to Monastery Lake, all the way up to & behind the fish hatchery is private. Please respect all posted private waters.

Lures:  Small spinner
Bait:  Worms, power bait and Salmon eggs

Morphy Lake: Stocked with 2550 Rainbow Trout

A 50 acre lake 3 miles Northeast of LeDoux. Fish species Rainbow Trout.

Fishing conditions:  Good to excellent

Trout: 

Flies: Elk Hair Caddis

Lures: Pistol Pete's, Spinners and spoons
Bait:  Corn, worms, powerbait, salmon eggs, cheese or homemade dough balls

Coyote Creek: Stocked with 681 Rainbow Trout, the pond was stocked with 510 trout.

A small tributary to the Mora river near Guadalupita. Fish species- Rainbow and Brown Trout.

Fishing conditions: Fair

Flow: 3.9 CFS

Trout:  Fair, Mostly browns being caught, Average 8-10"
Flies: Bead headed nymphs and flash back phesant tails

Lures:  Small spinners
Bait:  Worms, salmon eggs

Storrie Lake:  

A 1200 acre lake 3 miles north of Las Vegas. Fish species- Rainbow Trout, Bass and Catfish.

Fishing conditions:  Good to excelllent, Boat ramp open

Trout:  Good, Average 16-18"
Lures:  Pistol Pete’s and spinners
Bait:  Garlic cheesse, fireballs

Bass:  Good

Lures: spinners

Bait: Garlic cheese, fire balls

Catfish: Slow

Bait: worms and stink bait

Santa Rosa Lake: 

A 2427 acre lake on the Pecos River 10 miles North of Santa Rosa Fish species- Catfish, Bass, crappie and walleye.

Lake Level: 3,544 surface acres down to 2,427 surface acres - 11% of capacity, 76% of average and 54% of last year. Water levels are dropping due to release from spillway!

Boating conditions: Good , boat ramp is open.

Clarity: Murky

Float fishing conditions: Fair to good

Shore fishing conditions: Fair

Walleye:  Good from boats, trolling weeds and trees.

Lures: 1/2 inch to 3 inch curly tail jigs and spinners

Bait:  Worms

Bass:  Good - off boats, around trees and edges in 6 - 10 feet of water

Lures:  4 inch orange tube jigs, crank baits and spinners

Bait:  Worms

Catfish: Slow - no report
Bait:  Stink bait and liver

Crappie: Good

Lures:  4 inch crawdad curly tail jigs

Bait:  Minnows and worms

Sumner Lake:  Winter trout waters! (stilling basin) 

A 2810 acre lake 19 miles Northwest of Fort Sumner. Fish species- Large Mouth, Small Mouth, White Bass, Walleye Bluegill and Catfish. stillig Basin is a short stretch of the Pecos River below Lake Sumner Dam. Fish species- (winter) Rainbow Trout and Catfish.

Lake Level: 2,810 surface acres down to 1,436 surface acres- 18% of capacity, 61% of average and 75% of last year.

Boating conditions: Excellent, Alamo Cove ramp open, Main Campground ramp open, Violation Canyon ramp open

Clarity:  Clear

Float fishing conditions: Fair to good

Shore fishing conditions: Fair

Trout:  Slow

Lures:  Spinners
Bait:  Minnows and worms

Walleye:  Good to excellent

Lures: Bombers and cranks

Bait:  Minnows, night crawlers and shrimp

Bass:  Good
Lures: Rattle traps, spoons, bombers
Bait:  Minnows and shrimp

Catfish:  Good to excellent
Bait: Worms and chicken liver

Blue gill/ crappie:  Good
Lures:  Jigging
Bait:  Worms, power bait and minnows

Ute Lake:

A 8200 acre lake West of Logan. fish species- Large Mouth, Small Mouth, White Bass, Walleye, Crappie and Channel Catfish.

Lake Level: 8,200 surface acres down to 6,517 suface acres

Boating conditions: Excellent, Logan ramp 1 open, Logan ramp 2 open, North ramp open, South Dam ramp open

Clarity:  Stained
Float fishing conditions: Good -be sure to get out early before winds come up!

Shore fishing conditions: Good, night fishing is reported as excellent.

Walleye:  Good

Lures: Crank baits, jigs, barbie doll reef runners, jerk baits in 15 to 20 feet  of water
Bait:  Minnow, bear hook and minnow in brush.

Bass:  Good 

Lures: Shad colored crank baits, jigs, spinner baits 4 feet of water.
Bait:  Minnows, 2 inch grubs

Catfish:  Good in the coves in 15 to 20 feet of water.

Bait: Cheese and Stink baits and nightcrawlers

Crappie:  Fair to good 

Lures:  Copper bladed rooster tail, and jigs

Bait: Minnows and 2 inch grubs

Conchas Lake:  

A 10,492 acre lake on the Canadian River 32 miles Northwest of Tucumcari. Fish species- Large and Small Mouth Bass, Bluegill, Crappie, Walleye and Catfish.

Lake Level: 8,472 surface acres down to 3,116 surface acres- 13% of capacity, 17% of average and 37% of last year.

Boating conditions: Fair- North side ramp #1 closed, North side ramp #2 closed, North side ramp#3 open, North side ramp #4 closed, North side #5 open, South side #1 closed and South side #2 closed.

Clarity: Murky, visability to 3 feet

Float fishing conditions: Good to Excellent 

Shore fishing conditions: Good 

Walleye:  Good to excellent, jigging in shallow water.

Lures:  Silver and purple hot n tot, in less than 10' water and wally divers
Bait:  Nightcrawlers and minnows 

Bass:  Fair for whites and blacks, excellent for Large Mouths 

Lures:  Gizitzs, jigs and plastics

Bait:  Minnows and worms

Catfish:  Good off dock
Bait:  trot lines with liver and stink bait

Bluegill / Crappie:  Good when fish are found

Bait:  Minnows and worms
