San Juan River:

A large River flowing from Southwest Colorado through Navajo Dam to Farmington where it joins the Animas River and then heads back into Colorado. The San Juan River below Navajo Dam is rated as one of the best tailwaters in the country, providing excellent opportunities for trophy trout! Fish species- (Blue Ribbon)- Rainbow, Brown and Cutthroat Trout. Below Blanco- Catfish, Brown and Rainbow Trout.

Upper section – Catch and Release: NM Dept. of Game and Fish will be out informing anglers of the new two fly maximum regulation on the quality waters which goes into effect on the 1st of July. They will be checking licenses and making sure the barbs on the hooks are gone starting imediately. you might want to file the barb down to pass the inspection of a small tipet line. smashed barbs can fail the test and you will be sighted! 

Flow: 500 cfs for the time being!

Clarity: Clear

Float fishing conditions: Good to excellent

Shore fishing conditions: Good to excellent

Trout: Average is 18 inches
Flies: Red  or cream larva, bead headed phesant tails, chocolate or grey foam wing emergers, centilla midges and San Juan worms. As for drys- midges, Griffiths gnats, mayfly's and teresterials like ants and hoppers.

Lower section – 

Clarity - Murky
Float fishing conditions: Good
Shore fishing conditions: Good

Trout:  some big up to 18"a few 12"
Flies:  Eggs and chamois leeches
Lures:  Panther Martins, Gold blade hook with worm
Bait:  Night crawlers, green label salmon eggs

Navajo Lake:  

A 12,500 acre lake on the San Juan River 15 miles Northeast of Blanco. Fish species- Rainbow and Brown Trout, Kokanee Salmon, Large and Small Mouth Bass, Yellow Perch, Channel Catfish, Crappie, Blue Gill and Northern Pike.

Clarity: Tea Green

Lake Level: 12,500 surface acres down to 11,000 surface acres - 84% of capacity, 104% of average and 90% of last year.

Boating conditions: Good ,Pine recreation boat ramp open - Sims Mesa boat ramp open

Float fishing conditions:  Good to Excellent

Shore fishing conditions:  Good

Bass:  whites are on Fire, Large mouth and black bass are fishing fair to good. fish are being taken on top water rigs!

Flies:  Wooley Buggers
Lures: Boogiebaits, scootertails and Crank Baits
Bait:  Worms, power bait

Trout:  Good to excellent

Flies:  Woolly Buggers
Lures:  Spinners
Bait:  Power bait, corn, salmon eggs

Bluegill / Crappie:  Good
Lures: Little orange or white jigs

Bait:  Minnows

Northern Pike:  Good to excellent mixed in with the bass

Flies:  7" Rebels
Lures: Rapalas, 7 to 9", spinners, crank bait

Chama River:

A Large stream flowing from South-central Colorado through El Vado and Abiquiu Lakes then joins the Rio Grande near Espanola. Fish species- Rainbow and Brown Trout.

Upper section – State Line to El Vado

Flow:   463 CFS
Clarity: Murky
Shore fishing conditions:  Fair

Trout:  Fish the slower water and close to banks.
Flies:  Bead headed nymphs, caddis and stimulators w/ dropper
Lures: Spinners, mets, blue fox
Bait:  Worms and salmon eggs

Lower section – El Vado Dam to Abiquiu Lake

Flow: 719 CFS

Clarity:  Stained
Shore Fishing conditions: Fair- water is high, fish the slower pockets and eddies.

Trout:  Fair- two 19 inch trout caught this weekend

Flies: : Black woolley buggers and bead headed nymphs
Lures:  Black and yellow Panther Martins, orange broken back rapalas
Bait: Nightcrawlers

Heron Lake:

A 5207 acre lake west of Tierra Amarilla. Fish species- Rainbow and Lake Trout, Kokanee Salmon.

Lake Level: 5,207 surface acres down to 3,943 surface acres - 67% of capacity, 91% of average and 124% of last year.

Boating conditions: Good, Dirt Low Water Ramp open, Willow Creek ramp open and La Laja boat ramp Open

Clarity:  Stained, lake is clearing.

Float fishing conditions: Good

Shore fishing conditions: Good - Try by Dam and Piedra Cove

Trout:  Good
Flies:  Wooley buggers
Lures:  Spinners
Bait:  Corn, worms power bait, roe sacs

Lake Trout:  Slow

Lures:  Flat fish-trolling
Bait:  Power bait, corn, roe sacs

Salmon:  Good to excellent

Flies:
Lures: Orange dynamax lure and Rainbow Double whammy's

Bait:  Lime green power bait, corn, roe sacs

El Vado Lake:

A 3332 acre lake on the Chama River 25 miles Southwest of Tierra Amarilla, Fish species- Rainbow and Brown Trout, Kokanee Salmon. 

Lake Level: 3,332 surfac acres down to 1,858 surface acres - 92% of capacity, 124% of average and 99% of last year.

Boating conditions: Excellent, main boat ramp open, North boat ramp closed

Clarity: Murky
Float fishing conditions: Good

Shore fishing conditions: Good off dam and at Hardgrove Point. 

Trout:  Good to excellent on the West and East sides of dam and at Hardgrove Point
Lures:  Black Panther Martins just below the surface or gold spoons
Bait:  Corn, lime green power bait, roe sacs

Salmon:  No report yet!

Abiquiu Lake:

A 4000 acre lake on the Chama River Northwest of Abiquiu. Fish species- Catfish, Crappie, Large and Small Mouth Bass, Walleye and Rainbow Trout.

Clarity: Stained

Lake Level: 15% of capacity, 116% of average and 101% of last year.

Boating conditions: Good 

Float fishing conditions: Good to excellent, words out! over 100 boats this weekend...

Shore fishing conditions: Good to fair

Trout:   good

Lures:  Panther Martin’s, spinners
Bait:  Power bait, salmon egg’s & worms

Bass:  Excellent

Lures: Crankbaits and rattle traps
Bait: Worms

Crappie:  Fair

Lures:  Crappie rig
Bait: cut worms

Walleye:  Excellent, fish in 30 to 15 feet of water

Lures:  Plugs and Plastics

Bait:  Minnows and worms with bottom bouncing rigs 

Catfish:  Good

Bait:  hot dogs and stink bait

Stone Lake: 

Fishing conditions: Slow with much pressure

Clarity: Clear

Trout:  slow, best bet is in the AM before winds come up.

Flies:  San Juan worms, egg patterns, beadhead wollybuggers, chironomidae emergers
Lures:  crocodiles, daredevils, rainbow trout patterned spoons, rapalas

Mundo Lake:

Fishing conditions:  Good and going to get great with the stocking of 700 - 16 inch rainbow Trout July 2.
