Northeast Report — Region 2

Rio Grande River: 

A major river orginating in Colorado and flowing South through New Mexico into the Gulf Of Mexico. the Rio Grande Gorge above Pilar- fish species- Rainbow and Brown Trout, Channel Catfish, Flathead Catfish, Small Mouth Bass, White Bass and Northern Pike.

Flow: 1680 CFS at Taos Junction Bridge and 1120 CFS at Cerro (Wild Rivers).
Clarity: Muddy
Shore fishing conditions: Runoff is very high, fishing is very slow. River is Blown Out with the runoff!

Trout:  Slow 
Flies:  Caddis, dry and wet
Lures:  Spinners
Bait:  Worms, power bait and salmon eggs.

Small Mouth Bass:  Slow
Flies: Tan colored spinners, crawfish patterns
Lures:  Spinners
Bait:  Worms, power bait and salmon eggs

Northern Pike:  Slow

Flies:  Pike flies in red and white or chartruse
Lures:  Minnow Rapala
Bait:  Worms

Catfish:  Poor
Bait:  Worms, liver and power bait

Red River: Stocked with 1699 Rainbow Trout above Questa

A mountain stream that joins the Rio Grande South of Questa. Fish species Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout and at higher elevations Brook Trout and Cutthroats. 

Flow:  Flow  at Questa 196 CFS  and 221 CFS at hatchery.
Clarity:  Murky

Shore fishing conditions: Fair, water is dropping and fishing is starting to pick up, best to fish the eddies and along the banks. 

Trout:  Fair to good
Flies:  Copper Johns, flash back pheasant tails, stone flies

Lures: Panther Martin orange rooster tails
Bait:  Worms, glitter power bait and salmon eggs.

Rio Hondo: Stocked with 171 Rainbow Trout

A small tributary to the Rio Grande 12 miles North of Taos. Fish species- Rainbow, Brown, and Cutthroat Trout

Clarity: Clear but running high
Shore fishing conditions: Good

Trout:  Good

Flies:  Small nymphs, size 14-18, tractor drive, sizes 12-16
Lures:  Spinners
Bait:  Worms, power bait and salmon eggs

Rio Pueblo: 

A medium sized tributary to the Rio Grande near Tres Ritos. Fish species- Rainbow and Brown trout.

Flow: 23 CFS
Clarity: Iced tea

Shore fishing conditions: Fair, fish slack water and banks.

Trout: Good
Flies:  Small nymphs, size 14-18, tractor drive, sizes 12-16
Lures:  Spinners
Bait:  Worms, power bait and salmon eggs

Eagle Nest Lake:

A 2768 acre lake south of Eagle Nest. Fish Species- Kokanee Salmon, Yellow Perch, Rainbow and Cutthroat Trout.

Lake Levels: 2,768 surface acres down to 1,490 surface acres

Boating Conditions: Excellent, Main boat ramp (north) closed, South boat ramp Open

Clarity: Clear

Float fishing conditions: Good - trolling starting to pick up

Shore fishing conditions: Good to excellent, Get on the lake early to avoid the wind.

Trout:  Good
Flies:  Chronomids, Small green Woolley Buggers, and blue or Brown Damsel Flys

Lures: Needle fish, panther Martins
Bait:  Power Bait & roe sacs

Salmon: Spread out, slow with a few being caught

Flies: woolly buggers
Lures: 1/4 oz jigs with meal and wax worms
Bait: 

Yellow Perch: Good 

Flies: woolly buggers and bead headed nymphs 

Bait: Worms 

Cabresto Lake:

A 15 acre lake 6 miles north east of Questa. Fish Species- Rainbow, Brown, Brook and Cutthroat Trout.

Fishing conditions: Good, also fishing is good at Colombine Creek!

Trout:  Excellent for small Brookies
Flies:  Bead headed nymphs

Lures: spinners

Bait: Worms

Cimarron River: Stocked with 2061 Rainbow Trout

A small stream flowing from Eagle Nest Lake through Cimarron to Springer. Fish species- Brown and Rainbow Trout

Flow:  59 CFS in town and 60 CFS at spillway
Clarity: Iced tea
Shore Fishing conditions:

Trout:  Good - excellent average size 10-12 inches 

Flies:  Attractor dry stone fly, size 10 with smaller hares ear dropper - from about 8am to 3pm hatches are going.

Lures: Small spinners, Panther Martins or Mepps
Bait:  Worms, salmon eggs and power bait 

Valle Vidal: 

Costilla Creek: Open- July 1, 2008 Will have report next week!

A medium sized river flowing from Colorado West into Costillaq Lake then into the Rio Grande. Fish species- Brown, Rainbow, and Cutthroat Trout.

3 small lakes on the Villa Vidal Unit of Carson National Forest. Fish Speices - Rainbow.

Springer Lakes: 

A 450 acre lake 5 mile Northwest of Springer. Fish species- Northern Pike, Large Mouth Bass, Yellow Perch and Channel Catfish.

Fishing conditions: Good

Trout: Good

Bait: Night crawlers

Catfish: Fair to good
Bait:  Salmon eggs & nightcrawlers

Northern Pike:  Fair to good
Lures:  Rapalas and rattlers
Bait: Salmon eggs & nightcrawlers

Maxwell Lakes:

500 acres of lakes including lake 13, Stubblefield and Laguna Madre Lakes. Fish spieces- Channel Catfish, Large Mouth Bass, Walleye, Yellow Perch and Rainbow Trout.

Lake Alice: 

A 4 acre lake South of Lake Moloya. Fish Species- Rainbow Trout.

Bait: Corn, Salmon eggs and worms

Lake Maloya: 

A 150 acre lake 12 miles Northeast of Raton. Fish species- Rainbow trout.

Fishing conditions: Good to excellent, limits being caught.

Flies: Bead headed nymphs
Lures: Sm Spinners
Bait: dough baits and worms 

Charette Lakes: Lower lake stocked with 2100 Rainbow Trout

2 lakes, totaling 400 acres found 15 miles southwest of springer. Fish Species- Rainbow Trout, Brown Trout and Yellow perch.

Fishing conditions: Good

Trout: 

Flies: Bead headed nymphs
Lures: Sm Spinners and pistol Pete's
Bait: dough baits and worms 

Clayton Lake: 

A 175 acre lake 16 mile Northwest of Clayton. Fish species- Large Mouth Bass, Green Sunfish, Catfish, Walleye and (winter) RainBow Trout.

Lake Level: 175 surface acres down to 50 surface acres

Boating conditions: excellent, Main boat ramp open

Float fishing conditions: Good, small boats work best here!

Shore fishing conditions: Good

Trout:  Good, fish are Averaging 12-15" inches

Flies: Wooley Buggers

Lures: Colorado spoons and Pistol Pete's

Bait:  Extra Scent power bait, worms
Bass: Fair

Lures:  Spinners and crank baits

Bait: Night crawlers 
Walleye:  Fair, fish are averaging 15" inches
